Once upon a time, there was a man who lived in King Akbar’s Kingdom. He and his family wanted to go for a pilgrimage. He put all his savings, a few gold and silver coins and some jewellery in an empty pickle jar.
He gave the pickle jar to his neighbour. He asked his neighbour to keep it safely until he came back. The neighbour took the pickle jar and promised to keep it safely.

Er gab seinem Nachbarn das Gurkenglas. Er bat seinen Nachbarn, es sicher aufzubewahren, bis er zurückkam. Der Nachbar nahm das Gurkenglas und versprach, es sicher aufzubewahren.
The man came from his pilgrimage and then went to meet his neighbour. He asked the neighbour for his pickle jar. The neighbour brought the jar from inside and gave it to the man. When the man opened the jar, he saw that there was just some mango pickle in the jar, instead of the money.
He said, “Sir, when I gave you this jar, it was full of all my hard earned money. Now it does not have any money and has only mango pickle.”
TranslateDer Mann kam aus seiner Pilgerreise und ging dann zu seinem Nachbarn. Er bat den Nachbarn um sein Gurkenglas. Der Nachbar brachte das Glas von innen und gab es dem Mann. Als der Mann das Glas öffnete, sah er, dass sich anstelle des Geldes nur eine Mangogurke im Glas befand.
Er sagte: „Herr, als ich Ihnen dieses Glas gab, war es voll von all meinem hart verdienten Geld. Jetzt hat es kein Geld mehr und nur noch Mango-Gurke.“
The dishonest neighbour replied, “I do not know that you gave me money. I did not touch the jar. Whatever you gave me, I am giving it back to you.”
The man started to cry and went to Birbal for justice. He told Birbal the entire story and how the neighbour was stealing his money. Birbal said that he would help the man.
TranslateDer unehrliche Nachbar antwortete: „Ich weiß nicht, dass Sie mir Geld gegeben haben. Ich habe das Glas nicht berührt. Was auch immer Sie mir gegeben haben, ich gebe es Ihnen zurück.“
Der Mann fing an zu weinen und ging zu Birbal, um Gerechtigkeit zu erlangen. Er erzählte Birbal die ganze Geschichte und wie der Nachbar sein Geld stahl. Birbal sagte, dass er dem Mann helfen würde.
Birbal went to the neighbour and asked him, “Where is the money that was kept in this jar?”
The neighbour replied, “Dear Birbal, I have told my neighbour that I do not know anything about the money. He gave me a pickle jar and I did not open the jar even once. I only took the jar from him, kept it safely and then returned it back to him. Instead of thanking me for taking his jar of pickle, he is accusing me of theft.”
TranslateBirbal ging zum Nachbarn und fragte ihn: „Wo ist das Geld, das in diesem Glas aufbewahrt wurde?”
Der Nachbar antwortete: „Lieber Birbal, ich habe meinem Nachbarn gesagt, dass ich nichts über das Geld weiß. Er gab mir ein Gurkenglas und ich habe das Glas nicht ein einziges Mal geöffnet. Ich nahm ihm nur das Glas ab, bewahrte es sicher auf und gab es ihm zurück. Anstatt mir dafür zu danken, dass ich sein Gurkenglas genommen habe, beschuldigt er mich des Diebstahls.“
Birbal asked the man, “How long were you keeping the jar?”
The neighbour said, “I kept the jar safely for 6 months.”
TranslateBirbal fragte den Mann: „Wie lange haben Sie das Glas aufbewahrt?”
Der Nachbar sagte: „Ich habe das Glas 6 Monate lang sicher aufbewahrt.”
Birbal knew how to check the story. Birbal went out for a few hours and came back with another man.
Birbal asked him, “Dear chef, you work in the royal kitchens. Can you please look at this pickle and tell me how old it is?”
TranslateBirbal wusste, wie man die Geschichte überprüft. Birbal ging für ein paar Stunden aus und kam mit einem anderen Mann zurück.
Birbal fragte ihn: „Lieber Koch, Sie arbeiten in der königlichen Küche. können Sie Ihnen bitte diese Gurke ansehen und mir sagen, wie alt sie ist?“
The man took one look at the pickle and said, “That is very easy to say. The pickle is not old. It is not pickled enough. It was definitely not made six months back. This man is a liar”
TranslateDer Mann warf einen Blick auf die Gurke und sagte: „Das ist sehr einfach zu sagen. Die Gurke ist nicht alt. Es ist nicht genug eingelegt. Es wurde definitiv nicht vor sechs Monaten gemacht. Dieser Mann ist ein Lügner.“
The neighbour started to blabber and when Birbal said that he would throw him into jail, he confessed and gave him the full money back. Birbal also made him pay a fine of 5 gold coins to the man for stealing the money.
The man was very happy that he got his money back. He thanked Birbal and the chef.
TranslateDer Nachbar fing an zu plappern und als Birbal sagte, dass er ihn ins Gefängnis werfen würde, gestand er und gab ihm das volle Geld zurück. Birbal ließ ihn auch eine Geldstrafe von 5 Goldmünzen an den Mann zahlen, weil er das Geld gestohlen hatte.
Der Mann war sehr froh, dass er sein Geld zurückbekommen hatte. Er dankte Birbal und dem Koch.
The man said, “Dear chef. You are amazing. You took one look at the pickle and said it was not even one month old. How did you do that?”
The chef said, “I am not a chef. I am Birbal’s servant. He asked me to lie and tell that the pickle was not six months old. Your neighbour confessed by himself.”
TranslateDer Mann sagte: „Lieber Koch. Sie sind unglaublich. Sie haben einen Blick auf die Gurke geworfen und gesagt, sie sei noch nicht einmal einen Monat alt. Wie haben Sie das gemacht?”
Der Koch sagte: „Ich bin kein Koch. Ich bin Birbals Diener. Er bat mich zu lügen und zu sagen, dass die Gurke nicht sechs Monate alt war. Ihr Nachbar hat selbst gestanden.“
