Once upon a time, King Akbar and Birbal were walking around the palace garden.
King Akbar asked Birbal, “Who is the noblest man you have met?”
Birbal said, “My King, of course it is you. There is no doubt about it.”

König Akbar fragte Birbal: „Wer ist der edelste Mann, den Sie getroffen haben?”
Birbal sagte: „Mein König, natürlich sind Sie es. Es besteht kein Zweifel daran.”
King Akbar said, “But can you say that there is a man who is the lowest but also the noblest at the same time? Can you find me a man who is both?”
Birbal thought for a moment and said, “Yes sir. I know one person who is the lowest and also the noblest”
TranslateKönig Akbar sagte: „Aber können Sie sagen, dass es einen Mann gibt, der gleichzeitig der Niedrigste, aber auch der Edelste ist? Kannst du mir einen Mann finden, der beides ist?“
Birbal dachte einen Moment nach und sagte: „Ja, Herr. Ich kenne eine Person, die die niedrigste und auch die edelste ist.“
King Akbar was amused. He said, “Can I see that person?”
Birbal said, “Yes sir. You can invite him tomorrow to your home for dinner. I will introduce him to you and your family.”
TranslateKönig Akbar war amüsiert. Er sagte: “Kann ich diese Person sehen?”
Birbal sagte: „Ja, Herr. Sie können ihn morgen zum Abendessen zu sich nach Hause einladen. Ich werde ihn Ihnen und Ihrer Familie vorstellen.“
The next day King Akbar and his family prepared a grand feast for their guest. Birbal came back with a man who looked very poor. His dress was dirty and he looked as if he had not had food in many days.
He fell at the feet of the King and thanked him for allowing him into the palace. King Akbar felt pity and asked his guards to give him a bath and also give him some fresh clothes. He returned some time later cleaner and fresher.
TranslateAm nächsten Tag bereiteten König Akbar und seine Familie ein großes Fest für ihren Gast vor. Birbal kam mit einem Mann zurück, der sehr arm aussah. Sein Kleid war schmutzig und er sah aus, als hätte er seit vielen Tagen nichts mehr gegessen.
Er fiel dem König zu Füßen und dankte ihm, dass er ihn in den Palast gelassen hatte. König Akbar hatte Mitleid und bat seine Wachen, ihn zu baden und ihm frische Kleidung zu geben. Er kehrte einige Zeit später sauberer und frischer zurück.
When they were eating dinner, Akbar asked Birbal, “Now tell me how he is the lowest?”
Birbal said, “He is a beggar. He lives outside the temple. He has only one set of clothes and eats only on days when the temple gives him free food.”
TranslateAls sie zu Abend aßen, fragte Akbar Birbal: „Jetzt sagen Sie mir, wie er der Niedrigste ist?”
Birbal sagte: „Er ist ein Bettler. Er lebt außerhalb des Tempels. Er hat nur ein Kleidungsstück und isst nur an Tagen, an denen der Tempel ihm kostenloses Essen gibt.“
King Akbar said, “Then I agree. He is indeed the lowest in the kingdom. But how is he the noblest.”
Birbal smiled and said, “He is a beggar who has been given a bath and a new set of clothes by the emperor himself. He is the only beggar to dine with the King and also his family. He is the only beggar whom the King and his family has spoken to. Thus, he is the noblest among all beggars.”
TranslateKönig Akbar sagte: „Dann stimme ich zu. Er ist in der Tat der niedrigste im Königreich. Aber wie ist er der edelste? ”
Birbal lächelte und sagte: „Er ist ein Bettler, der vom Kaiser selbst ein Bad und ein neues Kleidungsstück bekommen hat. Er ist der einzige Bettler, der mit dem König und auch seiner Familie speist. Er ist der einzige Bettler, mit dem der König und seine Familie gesprochen haben. Somit ist er der edelste unter allen Bettlern.“
