Aesop’s Fables – Der Pfauenschwanz
Once upon a time, all the birds could not fly and stayed on the land. The animals could catch the birds easily. This made the birds very sad. They went to God and asked for help.

The eagles, the vulture and the hawk said, “We wish to fly so high that nobody can catch us.”

God said, “You shall be able to fly even above the clouds.”
The eagles, the vulture and the hawk grew great powerful wings with which they could fly above the clouds and the storms.

The sparrows and the smaller birds said, “If the eagles are flying so high, we are not safe there as well. Please give us wings so that we can fly fast within the trees.”

God said, “You shall have small fast wings with which you can fly away quickly.”
The smaller birds grew small sharp wings with which they could fly in and out of trees.

The birds said, “Then let us swim above the water”
God said, “You shall have wings with which you can fly slowly but your bodies shall allow you to swim above the water.”

Lastly came the Peacock who was very vain. He said, “I wish to have a beautiful and magnificent tail filled with a hundred shiny colours.”
God said, “But don’t you wish to fly?”

The peacock grew the most beautiful tail in the world mixed with green and blue and gold and red and all that was beautiful. Everyone was stunned by his beauty for a few days.
TranslateDer Pfau wuchs der schönste Schwanz der Welt, gemischt mit Grün und Blau und Gold und Rot und allem, was schön war. Jeder war für ein paar Tage von seiner Schönheit verblüfft.
Soon they became used to the peacock and he was just another bird. However, they could fly and he could not.

The peacock could only stare and feel bad when the other birds could fly to see the sunset or the sunrise. He could not fly and see the world. He could not touch the clouds. He was stuck to the ground.
TranslateDer Pfau konnte nur starren und sich schlecht fühlen, wenn die anderen Vögel fliegen konnten, um den Sonnenuntergang oder den Sonnenaufgang zu sehen. Er konnte nicht fliegen und die Welt sehen. Er konnte die Wolken nicht berühren. Er klebte am Boden fest.
