Once upon a time, a great astronomer visited Akbar’s Kingdom. He was very wise and learned but was arrogant. He flaunted his knowledge about the earth, the solar system and the universe.
The Astronomer said to King Akbar “Many people say that the world is flat. It is round. We have found out that it is shaped like a sphere”
TranslateEs war einmal ein großer Astronom, der Akbars Königreich besuchte. Er war sehr weise und gelehrt, aber arrogant. Er stellte sein Wissen über die Erde, das Sonnensystem und das Universum zur Schau.
Der Astronom sagte zu König Akbar: „Viele Leute sagen, dass die Welt flach ist. Es ist rund. Wir haben herausgefunden, dass es wie eine Kugel geformt ist.“
Akbar said, “You say that the earth is round in shape. So if I travel in a straight line around the world, then will I come back exactly here?”
The astronomer said, “My King, you are correct!”
The King asked, “Why has no one done it already in real life?”
TranslateAkbar sagte: „Sie sagen, dass die Erde rund ist. Wenn ich also in einer geraden Linie um die Welt reise, komme ich dann genau hierher zurück?“
Der Astronom sagte: „Mein König, Sie haben recht!”
Der König fragte: „Warum hat es noch niemand im wirklichen Leben getan?”
The astronomer said, “Because the route is not land alone. You will have to cross vast oceans, high mountains and dense forests to go around in a straight line.”
The King said, “Well, that can be easily done then. We have boats to sail across oceans. We can cross mountains on horses. We use elephants to cross the forests”.
TranslateDer Astronom sagte: „Weil die Route nicht nur Land ist. Sie müssen weite Ozeane, hohe Berge und dichte Wälder überqueren, um in einer geraden Linie herumzugehen.“
Der König sagte: „Nun, das kann dann leicht gemacht werden. Wir haben Boote, um über Ozeane zu segeln. Wir können Berge auf Pferden überqueren. Wir benutzen Elefanten, um die Wälder zu durchqueren.“
“Yes sir. It is possible but is still extremely difficult,”
Akbar asked, “Why?”
The astronomer said, “It will take many years to complete the whole journey. The earth is very large.”
Translate“Jawohl. Es ist möglich, aber immer noch äußerst schwierig. “
Akbar fragte: „Warum?”
Der Astronom sagte: „Es wird viele Jahre dauern, bis die gesamte Reise abgeschlossen ist. Die Erde ist sehr groß.“
Akbar said, “Can you tell me how many years it would take to cross the world?”
The astronomer said, “No one can calculate that! My guess is that it will take a more than a hundred years.”
TranslateAkbar sagte: “Können Sie mir sagen, wie viele Jahre es dauern würde, die Welt zu durchqueren?”
Der Astronom sagte: „Das kann niemand berechnen! Ich vermute, dass es mehr als hundert Jahre dauern wird.“
King Akbar said, “I will ask my courtiers. They have an answer for everything,”
Various answers came from the audience:
TranslateKönig Akbar sagte: „Ich werde meine Höflinge fragen. Sie haben auf alles eine Antwort.“
Verschiedene Antworten kamen vom Publikum:
One courtier said, “This is impossible to calculate!”
Another courtier said “It will take around 25 years!”
One courtier said, “It will take fifty years.”
One courtier said, “Ten years!”
TranslateEin Höfling sagte: „Das ist unmöglich zu berechnen!”
Ein anderer Höfling sagte: „Es wird ungefähr 25 Jahre dauern!”
Ein Höfling sagte: „Es wird fünfzig Jahre dauern.”
Ein Höfling sagte: „Zehn Jahre!”
Everybody said something or the other but Birbal kept quiet.
King Akbar said, “Birbal, why are you so silent. Can you tell me an answer for this question?”
TranslateAlle sagten etwas oder das andere, aber Birbal schwieg.
König Akbar sagte: „Birbal, warum schweigen Sie so? Können Sie mir eine Antwort auf diese Frage geben?“
Birbal said, “My King, I was calculating the time required to go around the earth”
King Akbar asked, “Do you have the answer?”
Birbal said, “Yes! It will take just one day”
TranslateBirbal sagte: „Mein König, ich habe die Zeit berechnet, die erforderlich ist, um die Erde zu umrunden.”
König Akbar fragte: „Haben Sie die Antwort?”
Birbal sagte: „Ja! Es wird nur einen Tag dauern.“
King Akbar laughed and said, “Only one day! Even I know that it is Impossible! How can you even say that answer. In one day, we cannot cross one end of our kingdom to another”.
Birbal laughed and said, “Yes my King. It is possible. If you travel on turtle back, it will take you 1000s of years. If you travel on the back of the fastest horse, it will take you a few years. However, if you travel at the speed of the sun, it will take you exactly one day.”
TranslateKönig Akbar lachte und sagte: „Nur einen Tag! Selbst ich weiß, dass es unmöglich ist! Wie können Sie diese Antwort überhaupt sagen? An einem Tag können wir nicht ein Ende unseres Königreichs zum anderen überqueren.“
Birbal lachte und sagte: „Ja, mein König. Es ist möglich. Wenn Sie mit einer Schildkröte zurückreisen, werden Sie 1000 Jahre brauchen. Wenn Sie auf dem Rücken des schnellsten Pferdes reisen, werden Sie einige Jahre brauchen. Wenn Sie jedoch mit Sonnengeschwindigkeit reisen, brauchen Sie genau einen Tag.“
