Aesop’s Fables – La volpe e la cicogna

 

The fox is a very sly animal. He always wants to play tricks on every neighbour in the forest. He particularly loved making fun of the stork. He thought that the stork looked funny with its lock legs, long beak, long neck and small body.

La volpe è un animale molto furbo. Vuole sempre fare brutti scherzi a tutti i vicini della foresta. Amava particolarmente prendere in giro la cicogna. Pensava che la cicogna avesse un aspetto divertente con le sue zampe serrate, il lungo becco, il collo lungo e il corpo piccolo.

 

One day he thought of a brilliant plan.

“Ohhh. This trick is very funny. I must play this trick on the Stork”, he thought to himself.

Un giorno pensò a un piano geniale.

“Ohhh. Questo trucco è molto divertente. Devo fare questo scherzo alla Cicogna”, pensò tra sé.

 

He went to the Stork and pretended to be a good neighbour.

The Fox said, “Hello, Mr Stork. I hope you are well, this fine morning.”

Andò dalla Cicogna e finse di essere un buon vicino.

La volpe disse: “Salve, signora cicogna. Spero che tu stia bene, questa bella mattina.”

 

The Stork replied, “Why, I am very well Mr Fox, thank you so much for asking.”

The Fox smiled and said, “You must come home for dinner. I have caught a very tasty fish today morning. I wish to make and share a delicious bowl of fish soup with you.”

Mr. Stork was very pleased. “Definitely Mr. Fox. I shall see you at your home.”

La cicogna rispose: “Sto molto bene, signora volpe, grazie mille per avermelo chiesto”.

La Volpe sorrise e disse: “Devi venire a casa mia per cena. Ho pescato un pesce molto gustoso oggi mattina. Desidero preparare e condividere con te una deliziosa scodella di zuppa di pesce.”

Il signor Stork era molto contento. “Sicuramente. Ci vediamo a casa tua».

 

The stork arrived to the home of the Fox with good hunger for he loved fish soup. They chatted for a while and the Fox saw that the Stork was getting hungry.

La cicogna arrivò affamata a casa della Volpe perché amava la zuppa di pesce. Chiacchierarono per un po’ e la volpe vide che la cicogna stava diventando affamata.

 

The Fox served the soup but in a very shallow plate. The stork had such a long beak that it could only wet the tip of its beak. He could not swallow a single drop of soup. Meanwhile, the Fox was loudly lapping away making loud sounds of happiness.

La Volpe servì la zuppa ma in un piatto molto basso. La cicogna aveva un becco così lungo che poteva bagnare solo la punta del becco. Non riusciva a ingoiare una sola goccia di zuppa. Nel frattempo, la Volpe stava leccando rumorosamente facendo forti suoni di felicità.

 

The Stork was a very calm and smart bird and did not want to start a fight with the Fox. There was no use of fighting with the Fox. He thanked the Fox for the meal and went home hungry.

La cicogna era un uccello molto calmo e intelligente e non voleva iniziare uno scontro con la volpe. Non c’era motivo di combattere con la Volpe. Ringraziò la Volpe per il pasto e tornò a casa affamato.

 

A few days later, the Stork called the fox. He went to the Fox and pretended to be a good neighbour.

The Stork said, “Hello, Mr Fox. I hope you are well, this fine morning.”

The Fox replied, “Why, I am very well Mr Stork, thank you so much for asking.”

Pochi giorni dopo, la Cicogna chiamò la volpe. Finse di essere un buon vicino.

La cicogna disse: “Salve, signora volpe. Spero che tu stia bene, questa bella mattina.”

La volpe rispose: “Sto molto bene, signora cicogna, grazie mille per avermelo chiesto”.

 

The Stork smiled and said, “You must come home for dinner. I have caught a very tasty fish today morning. I wish to make and share a delicious bowl of fish soup with you.”

Mr. Fox thought about what had happened earlier but decided that the Stork was too dumb to play a trick on him. He said, “Definitely Mr. Stork. I shall see you at your home.”

La Cicogna sorrise e disse: “Devi venire a casa mia per cena. Oggi mattina ho pescato un pesce molto gustoso. Vorrei preparare e condividere con te una deliziosa scodella di zuppa di pesce.”

La Volpe pensò a quello che era successo prima, ma decise che la Cicogna era troppo stupida per giocargli uno scherzo. Disse: “Sicuramente. Ci vediamo a casa tua».

 

The fox arrived to the home of the stork with good hunger for he too loved fish soup. They chatted for a while. The Stork waited until the Fox was very hungry.

La volpe arrivò affamata a casa della cicogna perché anche lui amava la zuppa di pesce. Chiacchierarono per un po’. La Cicogna aspettò che la Volpe fosse molto affamata.

 

The Stork served the soup but in a tall jar with a very narrow neck. The stork had such a long beak that he could dip his beak in and enjoy the soup. The fox could not swallow a single drop of soup since the jar was too deep.  The fox soon lost its temper. The stork merely said, “Do not play tricks on your neighbours unless you can stand the same treatment yourself.

La Cicogna servì la zuppa ma in un vaso alto dal collo molto stretto. La cicogna aveva un becco così lungo che poteva immergere il becco e godersi la zuppa. La volpe non poteva ingoiare una sola goccia di zuppa perché il vaso era troppo profondo. La volpe perse presto la pazienza. La cicogna semplicemente disse, “Non fare brutti scherzi ai tuoi vicini a meno che tu non possa sopportare lo stesso trattamento da solo”.
