Aesop’s Fables – Le Wagoner et Hercule
Once upon a time, there lived a farmer who had a small farm. He used to harvest his crops and then take his cart to the market. The market was in the nearby village and he had to go through a country road.

One day when travelling to the market, it began to rain heavily. Soon the entire route was filled with muck and slush. The horses were struggling to pull the cart. Soon, the wheels became so filled with mud that they sank into the ground.
The farmer cried, “Oh I have such bad luck”.
TranslateUn jour, en se rendant au marché, il a commencé à pleuvoir abondamment. Bientôt, tout le parcours fut rempli de boue et de gadoue. Les chevaux avaient du mal à tirer la charrette. Bientôt, les roues sont devenues si remplies de boue qu’elles s’enfonçaient dans le sol.
Le fermier a crié: «Oh, j’ai tellement de malchance».
Much as the horses tried, they could not pull the cart out of the mud. He got out of the cart and stood next to the horses and cursed his bad luck.
TranslateBien que les chevaux aient essayé, ils n’arrivaient pas à sortir la charrette de la boue. Il est sorti de la charrette et s’est tenu à côté des chevaux et a maudit sa malchance.
“The mud is so deep and my luck is so bad. Even if the great and mighty Hercules were to come, he could not lift this cart up.”
Translate«La boue est si profonde et ma chance est si mauvaise. Même si le grand et puissant Hercule venait, il ne pourrait pas soulever ce chariot.»
He cursed and cursed but did not take any effort to remove the cart out of the mud. Eventually a man came and heard him curse.
TranslateIl jura constamment mais ne fit aucun effort pour sortir le charrette de la boue. Finalement, un homme est venu et l’a entendu maudire.
The man said, “Well, instead of cursing Hercules, you could help remove the mud around wheels of the wagon. That would get it out of the mud. Stop your whining and start taking some effort to help yourself.”
TranslateL’homme a dit: «Eh bien, au lieu de maudire Hercule, vous pourriez aider à enlever la boue autour des roues du chariot. Cela le sortirait de la boue. Arrêtez de pleurnicher et commencez à faire des efforts pour vous aider. »
The Farmer dug out the mud next to the wheels and soon the horses happily pulled out the cart.

The man said, “I hope that you have learnt your lesson. Self help is the best help one can get.”
