Once upon a time, all the birds could not fly and stayed on the land. The animals could catch the birds easily. This made the birds very sad. They went to God and asked for help.
The birds said “My great God. We cannot fly. We cannot run. We cannot swim. We cannot even fight. Please help us so that we can save ourselves from the animals.”
God felt bad and said, “Of course, my children. You may all ask whatever you want.”
TranslateLang geleden, konden alle vogels niet vliegen en bleven ze op het land. De dieren konden de vogels gemakkelijk vangen. Dit maakte de vogels erg verdrietig. Ze gingen naar God en vroegen om hulp.
De vogels zeiden: “Mijn grote God. We kunnen niet vliegen. We kunnen niet rennen. We kunnen niet zwemmen. We kunnen niet eens vechten. Help ons alstublieft zodat we onszelf kunnen redden van de dieren.”
God voelde zich slecht en zei: “Natuurlijk, mijn kinderen. Jullie mogen allemaal vragen wat je wilt.”
The eagles, the vulture and the hawk said, “We wish to fly so high that nobody can catch us.”
God said, “You shall be able to fly even above the clouds.”
The eagles, the vulture and the hawk grew great powerful wings with which they could fly above the clouds and the storms.
TranslateDe adelaars, de gier en de havik zeiden: “We willen zo hoog vliegen dat niemand ons kan vangen.”
God zei: “Je zult zelfs boven de wolken kunnen vliegen.”
De arenden, de gier en de havik kregen grote krachtige vleugels waarmee ze boven de wolken en de stormen konden vliegen.
The sparrows and the smaller birds said, “If the eagles are flying so high, we are not safe there as well. Please give us wings so that we can fly fast within the trees.”
God said, “You shall have small fast wings with which you can fly away quickly.”
The smaller birds grew small sharp wings with which they could fly in and out of trees.
TranslateDe mussen en de kleinere vogels zeiden: “Als de arenden zo hoog vliegen, zijn wij daar ook niet veilig. Geef ons alstublieft vleugels zodat we snel tussen de bomen kunnen vliegen.”
God zei: “Je zult kleine snelle vleugels hebben waarmee je snel weg kunt vliegen.”
De kleinere vogels kregen kleine scherpe vleugels waarmee ze in en uit bomen konden vliegen.
The ducks, the geese and the swan said, “If the sky is fully taken, we are not safe there as well. Please give us a body so that we can swim.”
God said, “I have given the sea to the fish.”

The birds said, “Then let us swim above the water”
God said, “You shall have wings with which you can fly slowly but your bodies shall allow you to swim above the water.”
The ducks and the swan and the geese grew webbed feet with which they could swim.

God zei: “Je zult vleugels hebben waarmee je langzaam kunt vliegen, maar je lichaam zal je toestaan boven het water te zwemmen.”

Lastly came the Peacock who was very vain. He said, “I wish to have a beautiful and magnificent tail filled with a hundred shiny colours.”
God said, “But don’t you wish to fly?”
The peacock said, “No. I only wish to be beautiful”
God said, “You shall have a tail with which shall make you the envy of everyone”

God zei: “Maar wil je niet vliegen?”

God zei: “Je zult een staart hebben waarmee je iedereen jaloers zal maken.”
The peacock grew the most beautiful tail in the world mixed with green and blue and gold and red and all that was beautiful. Everyone was stunned by his beauty for a few days.
Soon they became used to the peacock and he was just another bird. However, they could fly and he could not.
The peacock could only stare and feel bad when the other birds could fly to see the sunset or the sunrise. He could not fly and see the world. He could not touch the clouds. He was stuck to the ground.
TranslateDe pauw groeide de mooiste staart ter wereld vermengd met groen en blauw en goud en rood en al dat moois. Een paar dagen lang stond iedereen versteld van zijn schoonheid.
Al snel raakten ze gewend aan de pauw en hij was gewoon een andere vogel. Zij konden echter vliegen en hij niet.
De pauw kon alleen staren en zich slecht voelen als de andere vogels konden vliegen om de zonsondergang of de zonsopgang te zien. Hij kon niet vliegen en de wereld zien. Hij kon de wolken niet aanraken. Hij zat vast aan de grond.
Moral: “Do not sacrifice your freedom for the sake of pomp and show.”
TranslateMoraal: “Geef je vrijheid niet op voor pracht en praal.”
