One day, Tenali Raman was on his way to a temple in Tirupati. The temple was three days away and he had to cross a large forest to reach the temple.

On the way, a traveller saw Tenali Raman and stopped him.

Un jour, Tenali Raman était en route pour un temple de Tirupati. Le temple était à trois jours et il a dû traverser une grande forêt pour atteindre le temple.

Sur le chemin, un voyageur a vu Tenali Raman et l’a arrêté.

 

The man said, “I am Ram Kumar. I am on my way to the temple in Tirupati. If you are going in the same route, can we please go together? I have heard that there are many thieves in the route. We can beat them if we are together.”

L’homme a dit: «Je suis Ram Kumar. Je suis en route pour le temple de Tirupati. Si vous suivez le même chemin, pouvons-nous aller ensemble? J’ai entendu dire qu’il y avait beaucoup de voleurs sur la route. Nous pouvons les battre si nous sommes ensemble.»

 

Tenali Raman was short and weak but he was very intelligent. The other man was large and looked very strong. Tenali immediately knew that the man was the thief. He agreed to walk along with him to Tirupati.

Tenali Raman était petit et faible mais il était très intelligent. L’autre homme était grand et avait l’air très fort. Tenali a immédiatement su que l’homme était le voleur. Il a accepté de marcher avec lui jusqu’à Tirupati.

 

They stopped at a small hut to sleep in the night. Tenali Raman paid for the lodging with a copper coin. At midnight, the thief woke up and saw that Tenali Raman was fast asleep.

Ils se sont arrêtés dans une petite hutte pour dormir la nuit. Tenali Raman a payé le logement avec une pièce de monnaie en cuivre. À minuit, le voleur s’est réveillé et a vu que Tenali Raman dormait profondément.

 

He was a very skilled thief and did not make any sound. He checked under Tenali Raman’s pillow but there was no money there. He checked Tenali Raman’s bag but there was no money there. He checked Tenali Raman’s pockets but there was no money there as well.

C’était un voleur très habile et ne faisait aucun bruit. Il a vérifié sous l’oreiller de Tenali Raman mais il n’y avait pas d’argent là-bas. Il a vérifié le sac de Tenali Raman, mais il n’y avait pas d’argent. Il a vérifié les poches de Tenali Raman, mais il n’y avait pas non plus d’argent.

 

The thief was very disappointed. He was sure that Tenali Raman had money since he had paid for the lodging with a copper coin.

The next morning, the two woke up and started walking towards Tirupati. They again stopped at a second hut to sleep for the night. Tenali Raman paid for the lodging with a copper coin. At midnight, the thief carefully woke up and saw that Tenali Raman was asleep and snoring.

Le lendemain matin, les deux se sont réveillés et ont commencé à marcher vers Tirupati. Ils s’arrêtèrent à nouveau dans une deuxième hutte pour dormir la nuit. Tenali Raman a payé le logement avec une pièce de monnaie en cuivre. A minuit, le voleur s’est réveillé avec précaution et a vu que Tenali Raman dormait et ronflait.

 

The thief carefully checked all the bags of Tenali Raman. He even carefully removed the pillow and checked it fully. There were no coins anywhere. The thief was very disappointed again.

Le voleur a soigneusement vérifié tous les sacs de Tenali Raman. Il a même soigneusement enlevé l’oreiller et l’a vérifié complètement. Il n’y avait aucune pièce de monnaie nulle part. Le voleur a de nouveau été très déçu.

 

The next day they both woke up and reached Tirupati. Tenali Raman had a bag of money in his hand. The thief told Tenali, “I do not know if you knew who I was. I am a famous thief and this is the first time I have failed. You are the smartest traveller I have met. Please tell me where you hid the money.”

Le lendemain, ils se réveillèrent tous les deux et atteignirent Tirupati. Tenali Raman avait un sac d’argent à la main. Le voleur a dit à Tenali: «Je ne sais pas si vous saviez qui j’étais. Je suis un voleur célèbre et c’est la première fois que j’échoue. Vous êtes le voyageur le plus intelligent que j’ai rencontré. Dites-moi où vous avez caché l’argent. »

 

Tenali Raman smiled and said, “I knew you were a thief since the first day. I hid the money in the only place you would never look.”

Tenali Raman a souri et a dit: «Je savais que vous étiez un voleur depuis le premier jour. J’ai caché l’argent dans le seul endroit où vous ne regarderiez jamais.»

 

The thief said, “But where did you hide it? I looked everywhere for the money!”

Tenali Raman said, “Did you look under your pillow?”

Le voleur a dit: «Mais où l’avez-vous caché? J’ai cherché partout l’argent! »

Tenali Raman a dit: «Avez-vous regardé sous votre oreiller?»

 

The thief was confused and said, “I checked under your pillow. Why should I search under my pillow?”

Translate

Le voleur était confus et a dit: «J’ai vérifié sous votre oreiller. Pourquoi devrais-je fouiller sous mon oreiller? »

 

Tenali Raman said, “I kept my money under your pillow since I was very sure that you would never search there.”

Translate

Tenali Raman a déclaré: «J’ai gardé mon argent sous votre oreiller car j’étais très sûr que vous ne chercheriez jamais là-bas.»
