One day, King Krishnadevaraya was discussing in his court about cats. King Krishnadevaraya loved cats and he had many cats in his palace.

Un jour, le roi Krishnadevaraya discutait dans sa cour des chats. Le roi Krishnadevaraya aimait les chats et il avait de nombreux chats dans son palais.

 

King Krishnadevaraya said, “Cats are the most intelligent animals in the world. They can climb trees, run very fast, do tricks and even catch the fastest prey by tricking them.”

Le roi Krishnadevaraya a déclaré: «Les chats sont les animaux les plus intelligents du monde. Ils peuvent grimper aux arbres, courir très vite, faire des figures et même attraper la proie la plus rapide en les trompant.»

 

The ministers agreed. One minister said, “That is true, my King. My cat can do a flip without its back touching the ground.”

Les ministres ont accepté. Un ministre a dit: «C’est vrai, mon roi. Mon chat peut faire un saut sans que son dos touche le sol.»

 

Another minister said, “That is nothing. My cat can climb a wall which is over 12 foot tall!”

Another minister said, “That is easy. My cat can swim across the river to catch fish!”

Un autre ministre a dit: «Ce n’est rien. Mon chat peut escalader un mur de plus de 12 pieds de haut!»

Un autre ministre a dit: «C’est facile. Mon chat peut traverser la rivière à la nage pour attraper du poisson! »

 

Each of the ministers started boasting about their cats. King Krishnadevaraya said, “Let us have a competition. Bring me a cat which can do something which no other cat can. I shall give you a 100 gold coins.”

Chacun des ministres a commencé à se vanter de ses chats. Le roi Krishnadevaraya a dit: «Ayons un concours. Apportez-moi un chat qui peut faire quelque chose qu’aucun autre chat ne peut faire. Je vous donnerai 100 pièces d’or.»

 

There were many ministers and each brought a cat. Each cat did a variety of tricks but it was repeated by some other cat.

Il y avait de nombreux ministres et chacun a amené un chat. Chaque chat a fait une variété de tours mais cela a été répété par un autre chat.

 

Tenali Raman brought his cat and said, “My King. My cat will do something which no other cat in the world will do. Just give me one bowl of milk.”

Tenali Raman a amené son chat et a dit: «Mon roi. Mon chat fera quelque chose qu’aucun autre chat au monde ne fera. Donnez-moi juste un bol de lait.»

 

The servant brought one bowl of warm milk. Tenali Raman put his cat in front of the milk. The cat smelled the milk and ran away and hid under Tenali Raman’s clothes.

Le serviteur a apporté un bol de lait chaud. Tenali Raman a mis son chat devant le lait. Le chat a senti le lait et s’est enfui et s’est caché sous les vêtements de Tenali Raman.

 

The King and the courtiers started to laugh, “How did you train your cat to be afraid of milk? Every cat loves milk. You cat must be the only cat which runs away from milk!”

Le roi et les courtisans se mirent à rire: «Comment avez-vous appris à votre chat à avoir peur du lait? Chaque chat aime le lait. Votre chat doit être le seul chat qui fuit le lait!»

 

Tenali Raman said, “I wanted to give my cat only the best milk. I used to boil the milk, cool it down and then give it to the cat. When she was a kitten, she was very greedy and tried to drink the boiling milk directly. Even before I could stop her, she burnt her tongue on the milk. Since then, she has been very afraid of milk. ”

Tenali Raman a déclaré: «Je voulais donner à mon chat uniquement le meilleur lait. J’avais l’habitude de faire bouillir le lait, de le refroidir et de le donner au chat. Quand elle était chaton, elle était très gourmande et essayait de boire directement le lait bouillant. Avant même que je puisse l’arrêter, elle a brûlé sa langue sur le lait. Depuis, elle a très peur du lait. »

 

The King gave Tenali Raman the 100 gold coins.
