Aesop’s Fables – De schildpad en de eenden
Once upon a time, there lived a tortoise who lived in a pond. He always wanted to see the world. He wanted to fly like the birds and the bees. He wanted to visit all the places in the world like the volcano, the ocean, the hills, the mountains and the forests. But he was very slow. Because he was so slow, he could not travel anywhere.

Hij wilde alle plaatsen in de wereld bezoeken, zoals de vulkaan, de oceaan, de heuvels, de bergen en de bossen. Maar hij was erg traag. Omdat hij zo traag was, kon hij nergens heen.
He became very good friends with two ducks who lived in the same pond. He told them many times:
“I wish to travel across the world. I wish to fly. I wish to fly like you.”
TranslateHij raakte goed bevriend met twee eenden die in dezelfde vijver woonden. Hij vertelde hen vele malen:
“Ik wil de wereld over reizen. Ik wil vliegen. Ik zou willen vliegen zoals jij.”
The ducks felt bad since the tortoise could not fly and that he was always sad. Soon, it was winter and the ducks had to travel south. They were about to fly away when the tortoise begged them:
“Please Mr and Mrs Duck. Please take me with you. I too wish to fly and see the world.”
TranslateDe eenden voelden zich slecht omdat de schildpad niet kon vliegen en hij altijd verdrietig was. Al snel was het winter en moesten de eenden naar het zuiden reizen. Ze stonden op het punt weg te vliegen toen de schildpad hen smeekte:
“Alstublieft meneer en mevrouw Eend. Neem me alsjeblieft mee. Ik wil ook vliegen en de wereld zien.”
The ducks were confused. They said, “But Mr. Tortoise, you cannot fly. You do not have wings. How can you come with us?”
The tortoise thought and said, “Maybe you can carry me?”
The Ducks said, “Oh No, Mr. Tortoise, you are too heavy for one of us to carry.”
TranslateDe eenden waren in de war. Ze zeiden: “Maar meneer de schildpad, u kunt niet vliegen. U hebt geen vleugels. Hoe kunt u met ons mee?”
De schildpad dacht na en zei: “Misschien kun je me dragen?”
De Eenden zeiden: “O nee, meneer de schildpad, u bent te zwaar voor een van ons om te dragen.”
The Tortoise started to cry and the ducks felt bad for him.
Mr. Duck said, “Please don’t cry Mr. Tortoise. We shall take you south for the winter.”
Mrs Duck said, “But how? How can we carry him? He is so heavy?”
TranslateDe schildpad begon te huilen en de eenden hadden medelijden met hem.
Meneer Eend zei: “Alsjeblieft niet huilen meneer Schildpad. We zullen je naar het zuiden brengen voor de winter.”
Mevrouw Duck zei: ‘Maar hoe? Hoe kunnen we hem dragen? Hij is zo zwaar?”
Mr Duck said, “Let us carry a stick between our beaks. Mr. Tortoise can hold on to the stick with his teeth and we both can carry him together.”
Mr. Tortoise said, “Oh. That is such a wonderful idea.”
TranslateMeneer Eend zei: “Laten we een stok tussen onze snavels dragen. Meneer Schildpad kan de stok met zijn tanden vasthouden en we kunnen hem samen dragen.”
Meneer Schildpad zei: “O. Dat is zo’n geweldig idee. “
Mr. Duck warned the Tortoise, “It is dangerous. Do not ever open your mouth or else you shall fall.”
The ducks held a stick and the Tortoise grabbed on with his teeth. The ducks took off into the skies gracefully and slowly. Soon the Tortoise was flying in the skies.
TranslateMeneer Eend waarschuwde de schildpad: “Het is gevaarlijk. Open nooit je mond, anders val je.”
De eenden hielden een stok vast en de schildpad greep hem vast met zijn tanden. De eenden stegen gracieus en langzaam de lucht in. Al snel vloog de schildpad in de lucht.
Mr. Tortoise was very happy. He could see his pond and it looked so tiny from up in the skies. He wanted to speak and say, “How small our pond looks”. But he remembered the warning of the duck and kept quiet.
TranslateMeneer schildpad was erg blij. Hij kon zijn vijver zien en die zag er van bovenaf zo klein uit. Hij wilde spreken en zeggen: “Wat ziet onze vijver er klein uit.” maar hij herinnerde zich de waarschuwing van de eend en zweeg.
Soon they passed a forest. He wanted to speak and say, “How beautiful our forest looks. Let us stop here”. But he remembered the warning of the duck and kept quiet.
They passed over a large city. Many of the people were pointing at the two ducks and the tortoise and saying, “How marvellous? A flying tortoise!”
TranslateAl snel passeerden ze een bos. Hij wilde zeggen: “Wat ziet ons bos er prachtig uit. Laten we hier stoppen.” Maar hij herinnerde zich de waarschuwing van de eend en hield zich stil.
Ze volgen over een grote stad. Veel mensen wezen naar de twee eenden en de schildpad en zeiden: “Wat geweldig? Een vliegende schildpad!”
He wanted to speak and say, “Yes. It is the most marvellous thing in the world”. But he remembered the warning of the duck and kept quiet.
The Tortoise heard a child shouting, “That tortoise is not special! The ducks are flying and he is cheating.”
TranslateHij wilde spreken en zeggen: “Ja. Het is het wonderbaarlijkste ter wereld.” maar hij herinnerde zich de waarschuwing van de eend en hield zich stil.
De schildpad hoorde een kind schreeuwen: “Die schildpad is niet speciaal! De eenden vliegen en hij speelt vals.”
The tortoise opened his mouth to argue back and he let go of the stick. The Tortoise fell down to the ground where he was dashed to pieces.
TranslateDe schildpad opende zijn mond om te protesteren en liet de stok los. De schildpad viel op de grond waar hij aan stukken werd geslagen.
Moral: “Foolish curiosity and vanity often lead to misfortune.”
TranslateMoraal: “Dwaze nieuwsgierigheid en ijdelheid leiden vaak tot ongeluk.”
