De os en de kikkers – Aesop’s Fables

Aesop Fables are among the oldest and most famous of short stories in the world. In the perry index, there are hundreds of short stories listed as a part of the Aesop Fables. This story is called as “De os en de kikkers” which translates to “The ox and the frogs”.  In this story, a frog wants to show off by trying to become as big as an ox.

The story 

Once upon a time, there lived a family of frogs in a pond. There was papa Frog with a fat belly and a loud croak, a mama Frog with beautiful large eyes, a brother Frog with his long tongue, and a sister Frog with her long nails.

There also were many baby frogs. Grandpa frog always used to read the newspaper. Grandma frog loved to bake. They were a very happy family of frogs.

Er was eens een familie van kikkers in een pond. Er was papa Kikker met een dikke buik en luide kwak, een mama Kikker met mooie grote ogen, een broer Kikker met zijn lange tong, en een zus Kikker met haar lange nagels.

Er waren ook veel babykikkers. Opa kikker las altijd de krant. Oma kikker hield van bakken. Ze waren een erg gelukkige familie van kikkers.

 

One day, a large ox came to the pond to drink water. SPLAAAASH! He walked straight into the pond and drank water. Papa frog and brother frog had gone to work in the fields. All the other frogs had gone to the shop to buy cakes. Only the baby frogs saw the Ox for the first time.

Op een dag kwam een ​​grote os naar de vijver om water te drinken. SPLAAAASH! hij liep regelrecht de vijver in en dronk water. Papa kikker en broer kikker waren gaan werken in de velden. Alle andere kikkers waren naar de winkel gegaan om taarten te kopen. Alleen de babykikkers zagen de Os voor de eerste keer.

 

“Wow, you are so big!” said one of the baby frogs to the Ox.

“Hello baby frog, yes I’m very big” said the ox proudly.

“Who are you” asked the baby frog.

“I am the Ox, strong and powerful. I pull the carts for my friend, the farmer”

‘Wow, Je bent zo groot! ”  zei een van de kikkertjes tegen de Os.

‘Hallo kleine kikker, Ja ik ben heel groot ” zei de os trots.

“Wie ben jij?” vroeg de kikker.

“Ik ben de Os, sterk en machtig. Ik trek de karren voor mijn vriend, de boer. “

 

“Wow. That huge cart over there?” the baby frog asked amazed.

“Yes. I can pull it easily even if 10 men sat in it!” said the ox proudly.

“There’s no bigger animal than the ox.” one of the baby frogs said.

“Indeed.”  all the baby frogs said together.

“You’re right!” said the Ox.

“Wauw. Die enorme kar daarginds? ” vroeg de kikker verbaasd.

“Ja. Ik kan hem gemakkelijk trekken, zelfs als er 10 man in zitten! ” zei de os trots.

“Er is geen groter dier dan de Os.” zei een van de babykikkers.

“Inderdaad.” zeiden alle kikkertjes bij elkaar.

“Je hebt gelijk!” zei de Os.

 

In the evening when all the frogs came back home, the baby frogs were very excited.

“What happened here? Why are you all excited?” papa frog asked.

“We saw an Ox. He is the biggest animal in the entire world” said one of the baby frogs.

“Hmm. Was he big? Was he bigger than me?” said Papa frog loudly.

‘S Avonds toen alle kikkers thuiskwamen, waren de babykikkers erg enthousiast.

“Wat is er gebeurd? Waarom zijn jullie allemaal zo enthousiast? ” vroeg papa kikker.

‘We hebben een Os gezien. Hij is het grootste dier ter wereld ”, zei een van de babykikkers.

‘Hmm. Was hij groot? Was hij groter dan ik? ” zei papa kikker luid.

 

“Yes. He is so much bigger” said the baby frog.

Papa frog pulled in his breath and puffed himself up.

“Is he still bigger than me?” said Papa frog loudly.

“Yes. He is so much bigger” said the baby frog.

Translate

“Ja. Hij is zoveel groter ” zei de kikker.

Papa kikker hield zijn adem in en blies zichzelf op.

“Is hij nog steeds groter dan ik?” zei papa kikker luid.

“Ja. Hij is zoveel groter ” zei de kikker.

 

Papa frog pulled in his breath even more and puffed himself up.

“Is he still bigger than me?” said Papa frog loudly.

“Yes. He is so much bigger” said the baby frog.

Papa frog pulled in his breath even more with great difficulty. He puffed himself up to his biggest size.

Translate

Papa kikker haalde nog meer zijn adem en blies zichzelf op.

“Is hij nog steeds groter dan ik?” zei papa kikker luid.

“Ja. Hij is zo veel groter ” zei de kikker.

Papa kikker haalde met grote moeite nog meer adem. Hij blies zichzelf op tot zijn grootste maat.

 

“Is he still bigger than me?” said Papa frog loudly.

“Yes. He is so much bigger” said the baby frog.

Papa frog pulled in his breath one last time. He puffed himself up so much that he exploded.

Translate

“Is hij nog steeds groter dan ik?” zei papa kikker luid.

“Ja. Hij is zoveel groter ”, zei de kikker.

Papa kikker haalde nog een laatste keer zijn adem in. Hij blies zichzelf zo op dat hij explodeerde.

 

Moral of the story:

Do not attempt the impossible.

Probeer niet het onmogelijke.
