Aesop’s Fables – De Leeuw zijn deel
Once upon a time, there was a Lion who was very strong. He could hunt well but of course as we know, a lion never hunts alone. Two or three lions could even kill an elephant.
TranslateEr was eens een leeuw die erg sterk was. Hij kon goed jagen, maar zoals we weten jaagt een leeuw nooit alleen. Twee of drie leeuwen kunnen zelfs een olifant doden.
Seeing that the Lion was alone, three animals thought that they should become friends with him. They were a jackal, a wolf and a fox. The Jackal and the fox could hunt only rabbits and squirrels. The wolf could hunt slightly bigger but not an elephant of course.
TranslateToen ze zagen dat de leeuw alleen was, dachten drie dieren dat ze vrienden met hem moesten worden. Het waren een jakhals, een wolf en een vos. De jakhals en de vos konden alleen op konijnen en eekhoorns jagen. De wolf zou iets groter kunnen jagen, maar geen olifant natuurlijk.
They thought, “If we were to become friends with the Lion, we could hunt huge animals. We could eat elephants and camels. We could eat deer and antelopes. We are going to never be hungry again.”
TranslateZe dachten: “Als we vrienden zouden worden met de leeuw, zouden we op enorme dieren kunnen jagen. We kunnen olifanten en kamelen eten. We kunnen herten en antilopen eten. We zullen nooit meer honger hebben.”
The Lion agreed to go hunting with the three of them and said, “Let us share equally whatever we hunt equally amongst the four of us.”
TranslateDe leeuw stemde ermee in om met zijn drieën te gaan jagen en zei: “Laten we gelijkelijk verdelen wat we jagen onder ons vieren.”
They managed to find a stag. The fox and the hyena scared the Stag and it began to run towards the trees. The wolf was waiting in the trees and tripped the Stag. When the stag fell, the lion pounced on him and killed the Stag.
TranslateZe hebben een hert weten te vinden. De vos en de hyena maakten het hert bang en het begon naar de bomen te rennen. De wolf wachtte in de bomen en liet het hert struikelen. Toen het hert viel, besprong de leeuw hem en doodde het hert.
They were all very happy. A stag would be enough for all of them. They would not have to hunt again for three or four days. The Lion directly sat at the front of the stag and asked the other three to move back.
TranslateZe waren allemaal erg blij. Een hert zou genoeg zijn voor hen allemaal. Ze zouden drie of vier dagen niet meer hoeven te jagen. De leeuw ging direct voor het hert zitten en vroeg de andere drie om terug te gaan.
The Lion said, “There are four of us. We need to split the stag into four equal pieces.”
The lion cut the stag into four parts.
“The first part goes to me since I am the King.”
TranslateDe leeuw zei: “We zijn met z’n vieren. We moeten het hert in vier gelijke stukken verdelen.”
De leeuw sneed het hert in vier delen.
“Het eerste deel gaat naar mij omdat ik de koning ben.”
The wolf, the jackal and the hyena became very happy. They started to move to the remaining portion when the Lion stopped them.
“The second part goes to the bravest. Who is that? That would again be me.”
TranslateDe wolf, de jakhals en de hyena werden heel gelukkig. Ze begonnen naar het resterende gedeelte te gaan toen de leeuw hen tegenhield.
“Het tweede deel gaat naar de moedigste. Wie is dat? Dat zou ik weer zijn. “
“The third part goes to the strongest. Who is the strongest amongst us? That would be me. The third part also belongs to me.”
The wolf, the jackal and the hyena became very angry. They wanted to protest but the lion was too strong to argue with. They kept quiet.
Translate“Het derde deel gaat naar de sterkste. Wie is de sterkste onder ons? Dat zou ik zijn. Het derde deel is ook van mij.”
De wolf, de jakhals en de hyena werden erg boos. Ze wilden protesteren, maar de leeuw was te sterk om ruzie mee te maken. Ze hielden zich stil.
The Lion said, “If anyone wants to fight with me for the fourth part, you may stay and die. The others can go before I kill you too.”
The wolf, the jackal and the hyena immediately ran away.
TranslateDe Leeuw zei: “Als iemand met mij wil vechten voor het vierde deel, mag je blijven en sterven. De anderen kunnen gaan voordat ik hen ook vermoord.”
De wolf, de jakhals en de hyena renden meteen weg.
Moral: “Might is right.”
TranslateMoraal: “Macht is recht.”
