Once upon a time, there was a farmer who wanted to water his crops. Since the river was far away, he wanted to buy a well. There was a rich man who owned a well.

Er was eens een boer die zijn gewassen water wilde geven. Omdat de rivier ver weg was, wilde hij een put kopen. Er was een rijke man die een put bezat.

 

The farmer purchased the well from the rich man for a price of 5 silver coins. The rich man was very cunning and wanted to cheat the farmer. He wanted to earn more money.

De boer kocht de put van de rijke man voor de prijs van 5 zilveren munten. De rijke man was erg sluw en wilde de boer bedriegen. Hij wilde meer geld verdienen.

 

The next day, the farmer went to the well with a bucket to draw water from the well. The rich man was standing outside the well and was smiling broadly.

De volgende dag ging de boer met een emmer naar de put om water uit de put te putten. De rijke man stond buiten de put en glimlachte breed.

 

The rich man said, “I have sold you only the well and not the water. If you want to take water from the well, you must pay me one silver coin every week.”

Translate

De rijke man zei: “Ik heb je alleen de put verkocht en niet het water. Als je water uit de put wilt halen, moet je me elke week een zilveren munt betalen.”

 

The poor man tried to argue but the rich man refused to listen. The rich man had many servants and the poor man could not fight the rich man for the water.

De arme man probeerde ruzie te maken, maar de rijke man weigerde te luisteren. De rijke man had veel bedienden en de arme man kon niet tegen de rijke man vechten om het water.

 

Not knowing what to do, the poor man began to cry. His neighbour saw him and said, “My dear friend, go to King Akbar and ask for justice. King Akbar is a great king and he shall help you.”

De arme man wist niet wat hij moest doen en begon te huilen. Zijn buurman zag hem en zei: ‘Mijn beste vriend, ga naar koning Akbar en vraag om gerechtigheid. Koning Akbar is een geweldige koning en hij zal je helpen.”

 

The poor man went to the king and complained about the rich man. Akbar listened patiently and looked at his minister Birbal.

De arme man ging naar de koning en klaagde over de rijke man. Akbar luisterde geduldig en keek naar zijn minister Birbal.

 

Birbal said, “My Lord, I shall take care of this. I shall go and pay a visit to this man.”

Birbal was a very famous minster who was known for his intelligence and wit. He went with the farmer to the rich man’s house.

Birbal zei: ‘Mijn Heer, ik zal hiervoor zorgen. Ik zal een bezoek brengen aan deze man. “

Birbal was een zeer beroemde minister die bekend stond om zijn intelligentie en humor. Hij ging met de boer naar het huis van de rijke man.

 

The rich man laughed and explained to Birbal, “Dear Birbal. I have only sold the well and not the water. If I sell a pot, should I also give away whatever is inside? That is not fair”

Translate

De rijke man lachte en legde aan Birbal uit: ‘Beste Birbal. Ik heb alleen de put verkocht en niet het water. Als ik een pot verkoop, moet ik dan ook weggeven wat erin zit? Dat is niet eerlijk”

 

Birbal said, “You are absolutely right. Does the water belong to you?”

The rich man said, “Of course it does.”

Translate

Birbal zei: ‘Je hebt volkomen gelijk. Is het water van jou? “

De rijke man zei: “Natuurlijk wel.”

 

Birbal said, “Then your water is occupying the well belonging to the farmer. You must pay him 2 silver coins weekly as rent.”

Translate

Birbal zei: “Dan bezet je water de bron van de boer. Je moet hem wekelijks 2 zilveren munten als huur betalen.”

 

The rich man realized that he could not cheat the farmer anymore. He apologized to the farmer and to Birbal. He also paid the farmer 1 silver coin as a penalty.

Translate

De rijke man besefte dat hij de boer niet meer kon bedriegen. Hij verontschuldigde zich bij de boer en bij Birbal. Hij betaalde de boer ook 1 zilveren munt als boete.

 

Moral: “Ability proves itself by deeds.”

Translate

Moraal: “Bekwaamheid bewijst zichzelf door daden.”
