De aap en de kat – Aesop’s Fables
Aesop Fables are among the oldest and most famous of short stories in the world. In the perry index, there are hundreds of short stories listed as a part of the Aesop Fables. This story is called as “De aap en de kat” which translates to “The sick stag“. In this story, a stag is very sick and he learns who real friends are and who fake friends are.

LEARN DUTCH THROUGH AUDIO STORY
The story
Once upon a time, a monkey and a cat lived as pets in the same house. They were the best of friends and used to do everything together. They used to play together. They used to get into all sorts of trouble together. Mostly they tried to steal and eat food which the man had hidden around the house.
One day the monkey and the cat were sitting beside the fireplace. Some chestnuts were roasting on the fireplace and they were giving off a wonderful aroma. The cat and the monkey were thinking on how to get them out of the fire.

Op een dag zaten de aap en de kat naast de open haard. Er lagen wat kastanjes te roosteren op de open haard en ze verspreidden een heerlijk aroma. De kat en de aap dachten erover hoe ze ze uit het vuur konden halen.
The Monkey was very cunning. It said, “I would happily get them out. But you are much more skilful and faster than I am. You can easily pull them out one at a time. I can divide them between the two of us.”
The cat agreed and quickly pulled a chestnut half out of the fire. She was slightly hurt but not so much. She repeated it a second time and pulled out a full chestnut. She did this again and again and her paw was burnt severely. Since she was in pain, she did not see that the monkey was eating them all quickly.
TranslateDe aap was erg sluw. Hij zei: “Ik zou ze er graag uithalen. Maar jij bent veel handiger en sneller dan ik. Je kunt ze er gemakkelijk één voor één uittrekken. Ik kan ze tussen ons tweeën verdelen.”
De kat stemde toe en trok snel een halve kastanje uit het vuur. Ze was licht gewond, maar niet zo erg. Ze herhaalde het een tweede keer en haalde er een volle kastanje uit. Ze deed dit keer op keer en haar poot was ernstig verbrand. Omdat ze pijn had, zag ze niet dat de aap ze allemaal snel opat.
The master came in and the two ran away as fast as they could. The Cat had a burnt paw and had not eaten a single chestnut. From that time onwards, the cat stayed away from the monkey and was happy eating mice.
TranslateDe meester kwam binnen en de twee renden zo snel als ze konden weg. De kat had een verbrande poot en had geen enkele kastanje gegeten. Vanaf dat moment bleef de kat uit de buurt van de aap en at ze graag muizen.
Moral of the story:
“The flatterer seeks some benefit at your expense.”
Moraal – De aap en de kat:
“De vleier zoekt enig voordeel ten koste van jou.”
