Tenali Raman – Tenali Raman et Babur
The famous King Krishnadevaraya ruled in Vijaynagar. The great Mughal King Babur ruled in Delhi. King Babur always wanted to meet Tenali Raman since he had heard a lot about the intelligence of Tenai Raman.

One day, Babur sent a messenger to King Krishnadevaraya. The messenger said, “Greetings, King Krishnadevaraya. The great Mughal Emperor Babur wants Tenali Raman to visit him in Delhi.”
TranslateUn jour, Babur a envoyé un messager au roi Krishnadevaraya. Le messager a dit: «Salutations, le roi Krishnadevaraya. Le grand empereur moghol Babur veut que Tenali Raman lui rende visite à Delhi. »
King Krishnadevaraya agreed and replied, “Tenali Raman shall go back with you tomorrow to Delhi.”
TranslateLe roi Krishnadevaraya a accepté et a répondu: «Tenali Raman vous accompagnera demain à Delhi.»
Tenali Raman and the messenger reached Delhi and settled in the royal guesthouse. Babur had a meeting in the night with all his courtiers.
TranslateTenali Raman et le messager atteignirent Delhi et s’installèrent dans la pension royale. Babur eut une réunion dans la nuit avec tous ses courtisans.
Babur said, “No one should laugh at Tenali Raman’s jokes tomorrow. I want to see how intelligent he is. I want to see him try new tricks to make us laugh then.”
TranslateBabur a déclaré: «Personne ne devrait rire des blagues de Tenali Raman demain. Je veux voir à quel point il est intelligent. Je veux le voir essayer de nouvelles astuces pour nous faire rire alors.»
The courtiers agreed and said, “Yes, my Emperor. We shall only frown at his jokes.”

The next day, Tenali Raman arrived in the court. He started to narrate one of his jokes, “Once upon a time, there was a famous clown.”

The courtiers yawned very loudly at the end of every joke. Similarly, every day this would happen and Tenali Raman understood what was happening.

He wore a cloth over his face so that no one would be able to recognize him. He found that Babur and all his ministers would walk by the river Yamuna every morning.
TranslateIl portait un chiffon sur son visage pour que personne ne puisse le reconnaître. Il découvrit que Babur et tous ses ministres marcheraient le long de la rivière Yamuna chaque matin.
Babur would be giving one coin to the beggars near the river every day. Tenali Raman thought of a very cunning plan. Tenali Raman disguised himself to look like an old man. He carried a spade and a small mango sapling.
TranslateBabur donnait chaque jour une pièce aux mendiants près de la rivière. Tenali Raman a pensé à un plan très rusé. Tenali Raman s’est déguisé pour ressembler à un vieil homme. Il portait une bêche et un petit arbre de mangue.
When the king came near him, Tenali started to plant the sapling into the ground. He made painful groaning sounds every time he dug into the soil.
TranslateLorsque le roi s’approcha de lui, Tenali commença à planter le jeune arbre dans le sol. Il émettait des gémissements douloureux à chaque fois qu’il creusait dans le sol.
Babur said, “My dear man, you are so old. You might not be alive when this tree produces its first mango. Why are you planting it?”
TranslateBabur a dit: «Mon cher homme, vous être si vieux. Vous n’êtes peut-être pas en vie lorsque cet arbre produit sa première mangue. Pourquoi le plantez-vous? »
Tenali Raman said, “Your Majesty, I ate the fruits of trees my forefathers planted. Similarly, my grandchildren will enjoy the fruits of this tree.”
TranslateTenali Raman a dit: «Votre Majesté, j’ai mangé les fruits des arbres plantés par mes ancêtres. De même, mes petits-enfants apprécieront les fruits de cet arbre.»
Babar exclaimed, “That is such a noble thought!”
Babar took a small bag and said, “Here, take this bag of gold coins.”
TranslateBabar s’est exclamé: «C’est une pensée si noble!»
Babar a pris un petit sac et a dit: “Tenez, prenez ce sac de pièces d’or. »
Tenali Raman replied, “Thank you, my King. I have proven you wrong. You said that I won’t be alive to enjoy the fruits of this tree. The tree has already given me the fruits even though I have planted it just now.”
TranslateTenali Raman a répondu: «Merci, mon roi. Je vous ai prouvé que vous aviez tort. Vous avez dit que je ne serais pas en vie pour profiter des fruits de cet arbre. L’arbre m’a déjà donné les fruits même si je l’ai planté tout à l’heure.»
Babar laughed loudly and so did his courtiers, “Well done, my old man. You are wise and clever and very funny too. What would you tell me if I gave you a second bag of gold coins?”
TranslateBabar rit bruyamment et ses courtisans aussi: «Bien joué, mon vieil homme. Vous êtes sage et intelligent et très drôle aussi. Que me diriez-vous si je vous donnais un deuxième sac de pièces d’or?»
Tenali Raman said, “A tree gives fruits once a year. I am getting the fruits twice, your Majesty! Hence I would say that this tree is a magic tree!”
TranslateTenali Raman a déclaré: «Un arbre donne des fruits une fois par an. Je reçois les fruits deux fois, Votre Majesté! Par conséquent, je dirais que cet arbre est un arbre magique!»
Babar again laughed loudly and appreciated his reply. He said, “Bravo! This second bag of gold coins is yours.”
TranslateBabar rit à nouveau bruyamment et apprécia sa réponse. Il a dit: «Bravo! Ce deuxième sac de pièces d’or est à vous.»
Tenali Raman said, “Your Majesty, at this rate you will give all your wealth to me. You are too kind.”

Babar laughed and agreed. Tenali Raman took off his fake beard and said, “Your Majesty, please look at me.”
TranslateBabar rit et accepta. Tenali Raman a enlevé sa fausse barbe et a dit: «Votre Majesté, s’il vous plaît, regardez-moi.»
Babar was surprised to see Tenali Raman. He was very happy on seeing his intelligence and wit. Babur said, “Tenali Raman, you are truly a great man.”
TranslateBabar fut surpris de voir Tenali Raman. Il était très heureux de voir son intelligence et son esprit. Babur a dit: «Tenali Raman, vous êtes vraiment un grand homme. »
