Akbar and Birbal – Indian Stories – Comment Birbal est devenu ministre
Once upon a time, in the kingdom of Akbar, there was a man called as Mahesh Das. He was a normal man, neither rich nor poor. However he was a very intelligent young man.

One day Akbar went hunting into the jungle. While chasing a deer, he went deep into the forest and lost his way. Mahesh Das used to collect wood in the forest and heard the King calling for help. He was familiar with the forest.
TranslateUn jour, Akbar est allé chasser dans la jungle. En poursuivant un cerf, il s’enfonça profondément dans la forêt et perdit son chemin. Mahesh Das ramassait du bois dans la forêt et entendait le roi appeler à l’aide. Il connaissait la forêt.
He searched and found the king. He helped the King reach the palace. The Emperor was so happy that he rewarded Mahesh Das with his ring.
TranslateIl a cherché et a trouvé le roi. Il aida le roi à atteindre le palais. L’empereur était si heureux qu’il récompensa Mahesh Das avec sa bague.
The Emperor also said that he would give him a posting at his court. After a few days Mahesh Das was asked to come to court.
TranslateL’empereur a également dit qu’il lui donnerait une affectation à sa cour. Au bout de quelques jours, Mahesh Das a été invité à se présenter au tribunal.
However he was stopped by the palace guard. Mahesh Das showed the guard the ring which the king had given to him. The guard was very greedy and thought that Mahesh Das was sure to get more rewards by the king.
TranslateCependant, il a été arrêté par la garde du palais. Mahesh Das montra au garde l’anneau que le roi lui avait donné. Le garde était très gourmand et pensait que Mahesh Das était sûr d’obtenir plus de récompenses de la part du roi.
The guard agreed to allow him inside the court but only on one condition. The condition was that Mahesh Das had to give him half the reward that he would get from the Emperor. Mahesh Das was a very intelligent man and accepted the condition.
TranslateLe garde a accepté de le laisser entrer dans le court, mais à une seule condition. La condition était que Mahesh Das devait lui donner la moitié de la récompense qu’il obtiendrait de l’empereur. Mahesh Das était un homme très intelligent et a accepté la condition.
Mahesh Das entered the court and bowed to the King who immediately recognized him.
TranslateMahesh Das entra dans la cour et s’inclina devant le roi qui le reconnut aussitôt.
King Akbar asked him, “You have done a great deed and have made me very happy. What do you expect as a reward from me? Ask and it shall be granted.”
TranslateLe roi Akbar lui a demandé: «Vous avez fait une grande action et m’avez rendu très heureux. Qu’attendez-vous de moi comme récompense? Demandez et il sera accordé.»
Mahesh Das said, “My King, as my reward, I want 50 lashes from you with your best whip.”
The courtiers and the King were all stunned. They thought that Mahesh Das was mad.
TranslateMahesh Das a dit: «Mon roi, comme récompense, je veux 50 coups de fouet de votre part avec votre meilleur fouet.»
Les courtisans et le roi étaient tous stupéfaits. Ils pensaient que Mahesh Das était fou.
Akbar asked Mahesh, “What is the reason behind your request?”
Mahesh Das said, “My King, for my reason to be explained properly, I wish to call the guard who was at the gate.”
TranslateAkbar a demandé à Mahesh: «Quelle est la raison de votre demande?»
Mahesh Das a dit: «Mon roi, pour que ma raison soit expliquée correctement, je souhaite appeler le garde qui était à la porte.»
King Akbar said, “Bring the guard to me immediately.”
The guard was brought before the King. The guard was very happy and thought that he was going to be rewarded.
TranslateLe roi Akbar a dit: «Amenez-moi le garde immédiatement.»
Le garde fut amené devant le roi. Le garde était très heureux et pensait qu’il allait être récompensé.
Mahesh Das said, “My dear King, this kind guard let me inside on one condition that I should pay him half the reward I receive from you. I want you to teach him a lesson. Please give 25 lashes to this guard so that I can keep my promise to him. After that, please give me 25 lashes as well, as I have to fulfil my promise to him.”
TranslateMahesh Das a dit: «Mon cher roi, ce gentil garde m’a laissé entrer à la condition que je lui paie la moitié de la récompense que je reçois de vous. Je veux que vous lui donniez une leçon. Veuillez donner 25 coups de fouet à ce garde afin que peut tenir ma promesse. Après cela, donnez-moi aussi 25 coups de fouet, car je dois lui tenir ma promesse. »
The King then ordered that the guard be given 25 lashes to both of them. The guard was also punished with 5 years of imprisonment. The King was very happy with Mahesh Das.
TranslateLe roi a alors ordonné que le garde reçoive 25 coups de fouet à tous les deux. Le gardien a également été puni de 5 ans d’emprisonnement. Le roi était très content de Mahesh Das.
King Akbar said, “You shall be called as Raja Birbal from now. You will be one of my ministers from today.”
TranslateLe roi Akbar a dit: «Vous serez appelé Raja Birbal à partir de maintenant. Vous serez l’un de mes ministres à partir d’aujourd’hui. »
