Tenali Raman – Tenali Raman en de drie poppen
One day, a famous pundit came to the King’s court. He was well learned and wanted to pose a challenge to the courtiers of the king.
He said, “My King, I have heard that you have very wise ministers in your court. I would like to test the wisdom of your ministers.”

Hij zei: “Mijn koning, ik heb gehoord dat u zeer wijze predikers aan uw hof hebt. Ik zou graag de wijsheid van uw ministers willen testen.”
The King became very interested and said, “My dear pundit, my ministers are the smartest in the world. Please go ahead.”
The merchant opened his bag and pulled out three dolls. The three dolls were identical. He gave these three dolls to the King.
TranslateDe koning raakte erg geïnteresseerd en zei: “Mijn beste expert, mijn ministers zijn de slimste ter wereld. Ga verder alsjeblieft.”
De koopman opende zijn tas en haalde er drie poppen uit. De drie poppen waren identiek. Hij gaf deze drie poppen aan de koning.
The pundit said, “These dolls look very similar but are very different in one way. If your ministers can find out the difference and the true meaning of the dolls, I will agree that they are the wisest. But if they cannot find the difference, then there are no wise ministers in your court. I will be back in one week.”
TranslateDe expert zei: “Deze poppen lijken erg op elkaar, maar zijn op één manier heel anders. Als uw ministers het verschil en de ware betekenis van de poppen kunnen ontdekken, ben ik het ermee eens dat zij de wijste zijn. The king asked all of his ministers to assemble. He gave them the three dolls and told them to find the difference in them in three days’ time.
But at the end of the sixth day, none of the ministers could figure out the difference. The king got worried and asked Tenali Raman, “Tenali, no one has been able to find the answer. It is up to you now. Find the difference between these dolls.”
TranslateDe koning vroeg al zijn ministers om samen te komen. Hij gaf ze de drie poppen en zei dat ze er binnen drie dagen het verschil in moesten zien.
Maar aan het einde van de zesde dag kon geen van de ministers het verschil ontdekken. De koning maakte zich zorgen en vroeg aan Tenali Raman: “Tenali, niemand heeft het antwoord kunnen vinden. Het is nu aan jou. Zoek het verschil tussen deze poppen. ”
Tenali said to the King, “Please give me the dolls and I shall take them home. I promise you that I will find the difference.”
Tenali looked at the dolls for hours and finally he laughed loudly. He found out the difference between the three dolls. He went to the court with the three dolls on the seventh day.

Tenali keek uren naar de poppen en lachte ten slotte luid. Hij ontdekte het verschil tussen de drie poppen. Op de zevende dag ging hij met de drie poppen naar de rechtbank.
Tenali Raman announced in front of the whole court and to the Pundit that he had found the difference between the dolls.
Tenali Raman said, “Thank you Punditji for such a beautiful question. These three dolls are different because one of them is good, one average and one bad.”
TranslateTenali Raman kondigde voor de hele rechtbank en aan de Pundit aan dat hij het verschil tussen de poppen had gevonden.
Tenali Raman zei: “Bedankt Punditji voor zo’n mooie vraag. Deze drie poppen zijn verschillend omdat een ervan goed is, een gemiddeld en een slecht.”
The Pundit smiled and asked, “Which doll is which?”
Tenali Raman showed a tiny hole in the ears of each of the dolls. He took a very thin wire and put it in the hole of the first doll’s ear. The wire came out from the doll’s mouth.

He put the wire into the ear of the second doll and the wire came out from the doll’s other ear. In the third doll, the wire went to the heart and did not come out.
Tenali Raman explained, “In the first doll, the wire went through the ear. The wire came out through the mouth of the doll. This doll is bad as it represents people who cannot keep a secret.
TranslateHij stak de draad in het oor van de tweede pop en de draad kwam uit het andere oor van de pop. Bij de derde pop ging de draad naar het hart en kwam er niet uit.
Tenali Raman legde uit: “Bij de eerste pop ging de draad door het oor. De draad kwam door de mond van de pop naar buiten. Deze pop is slecht omdat het mensen voorstelt die geen geheim kunnen bewaren.
The pundit smiled and nodded. Tenali Raman continued, “In the second doll, the wire went through one ear and came out of the other ear. This represents people who do not understand what is said to them.”
TranslateDe expert glimlachte en knikte. Tenali Raman vervolgde: “Bij de tweede pop ging de draad door één oor en kwam uit het andere oor. Dit vertegenwoordigt mensen die niet begrijpen wat er tegen hen wordt gezegd.”
The pundit smiled and nodded. Tenali Raman continued, “The third doll, the wire went through one ear and did not come out at all. This represents good people who will keep the secret that you tell them.”
TranslateDe expert glimlachte en knikte. Tenali Raman vervolgde: “De derde pop, de draad ging door één oor en kwam er helemaal niet uit. Dit vertegenwoordigt goede mensen die het geheim zullen bewaren dat je ze vertelt.”
The pundit asked if there was any other meaning to the dolls.
Tenali said, “Yes, there is another explanation too. The first doll represents people who gain knowledge and spread it to others, so they are good people. The second doll represents people who do not understand what they are taught, so they are average. The third doll represents people who have knowledge but keep it all to themselves. They do not teach anyone anything and so they are bad people.”

Tenali zei: “Ja, er is ook een andere verklaring. De eerste pop vertegenwoordigt mensen die kennis opdoen en deze aan anderen verspreiden, dus het zijn goede mensen. Ze leren niemand iets en dus zijn het slechte mensen.”
The king, the pundit and all the courtiers were very impressed with Tenali’s wise answer. The King gave Tenali 100 gold coins for his answer and 100 gold coins to the pundit for the question.
TranslateDe koning, de expert en alle hovelingen waren erg onder de indruk van Tenali’s wijze antwoord. De koning gaf Tenali 100 gouden munten voor zijn antwoord en 100 gouden munten aan de expert voor de vraag.
