Akbar and Birbal – Birbal en de astroloog
Once upon a time, there was an astrologer in Akbar’s Kingdom. He was very vain and always bragged to everyone about his accurate predictions. He used to say that there was no other astrologer in the world who was as great as he was.
TranslateEr was eens een astroloog in Akbars koninkrijk. Hij was erg ijdel en schepte altijd op tegen iedereen over zijn nauwkeurige voorspellingen. Hij zei altijd dat er geen andere astroloog ter wereld was die zo goed was als hij.
The royal astrologer heard his bragging and wanted Akbar to punish him. He told the King about the astrologer and all the bragging that he was doing.
King Akbar called the astrologer to court. He wanted to test the accuracy of his predictions.
TranslateDe koninklijke astroloog hoorde zijn opscheppen en wilde dat Akbar hem zou straffen. Hij vertelde de koning over de astroloog en al het opscheppen dat hij deed.
Koning Akbar riep de astroloog voor de rechter. Hij wilde de juistheid van zijn voorspellingen testen.
King Akbar said, “I have heard that you predict very accurately. Everyone says that you are the best astrologer in the world and that you can see the future”
TranslateKoning Akbar zei: “Ik heb gehoord dat u heel nauwkeurig voorspelt. Iedereen zegt dat je de beste astroloog ter wereld bent en dat je de toekomst kunt zien.”
The astrologer was very happy to stand in front of the great King Akbar. At the same time, he was filled with a great fear as he knew that he was a liar. He could only bow and not even a single word came out of his mouth. He kept bowing with his hands folded.
TranslateDe astroloog was erg blij om voor de grote koning Akbar te staan. Tegelijkertijd was hij vervuld van grote angst omdat hij wist dat hij een leugenaar was. Hij kon alleen maar buigen en er kwam zelfs geen woord uit zijn mond. Hij bleef buigen met zijn handen gevouwen.
Akbar asked, “My great astrologer, I shall give you a big reward if you are able to answer only one simple question. If you answer incorrectly, you are a liar and have lied to the King. I will have you executed. Tell me, when will you die?”
TranslateAkbar vroeg: “Mijn grote astroloog, ik zal je een grote beloning geven als je maar één simpele vraag kunt beantwoorden. Als je fout antwoordt, ben je een leugenaar en heb je tegen de koning gelogen. En dan laat ik je executeren. Vertel me, wanneer ga je dood?”
The astrologer was shaking with fear. He did not know what to say. He thought for a moment and then said, “My great King, I will have to check the stars and the charts to see it correctly. Can I give you my answer tomorrow?”
TranslateDe astroloog beefde van angst. Hij wist niet wat hij moest zeggen. Hij dacht even na en zei toen: ‘Mijn grote koning, ik zal de sterren en de kaarten moeten controleren om het goed te zien. Mag ik je morgen mijn antwoord geven?”
The Emperor agreed and sent him off. The astrologer went to Birbal for help and told him the whole story. Birbal scolded him at first for lying and told him never to lie again.
He then whispered a brilliant answer to the astrologer. He told the astrologer what to say in front of the King so that he could escape his death.
TranslateDe keizer stemde toe en stuurde hem weg. De astroloog ging naar Birbal voor hulp en vertelde hem het hele verhaal. Birbal schold hem eerst uit omdat hij had gelogen en zei hem nooit meer te liegen.
Toen fluisterde hij een briljant antwoord naar de astroloog. Hij vertelde de astroloog wat hij moest zeggen in het bijzijn van de koning, zodat hij aan zijn dood kon ontsnappen.
The astrologer returned to the court the next day and told the king, “I will die exactly three days before you, my King.”
Akbar was sure that the astrologer was bluffing, but did not want to take a chance. If he executed the astrologer, he would die in 3 days as per the prediction. He did not want to take this chance for no reason.
TranslateDe astroloog keerde de volgende dag terug naar het hof en zei tegen de koning: “Ik zal precies drie dagen eerder dan u sterven, mijn koning.”
Akbar was er zeker van dat de astroloog aan het bluffen was, maar wilde geen risico nemen. Als hij de astroloog executeerde, zou hij volgens de voorspelling binnen 3 dagen sterven. Hij wilde deze kans niet zonder reden aangrijpen.
Also the King did not want to know the time of his death so he could not ask the astrologer about the exact day. So King Akbar thanked the astrologer and gave him a bag of 100 gold coins and let him go.
Birbal saved the astrologer’s life successfully. That day onwards, the astrologer never bragged about anything.
TranslateOok wilde de koning het tijdstip van zijn dood niet weten, dus hij kon de astroloog niet vragen naar de exacte dag. Dus koning Akbar bedankte de astroloog en gaf hem een zak met 100 gouden munten en liet hem gaan.
Birbal heeft het leven van de astroloog met succes gered. Vanaf die dag schepte de astroloog nergens over op.
