Tenali Raman – Tenali Raman en het paard
Once, King Krishnadevaraya wanted to test his courtiers. He gave each courtier one horse to take care of. He told them that the winner would be the one who had the strongest horse at the end of one month.
TranslateOoit wilde koning Krishnadevaraya zijn hovelingen op de proef stellen. Hij gaf elke hoveling één paard om voor te zorgen. Hij vertelde hen dat de winnaar degene zou zijn die aan het einde van een maand het sterkste paard had.
He gave everyone a good amount of straw to feed the horses. Tenali Raman was not happy with this plan since he did not know much about rearing horses. He shut his horse in a stable. Every day at exactly nine o’clock, he gave the horse little straw through the window.
TranslateHij gaf iedereen een goede hoeveelheid stro om de paarden te voeren. Tenali Raman was niet blij met dit plan omdat hij niet veel wist over het fokken van paarden. Hij zette zijn paard op stal. Elke dag om precies negen uur gaf hij het paard stro door het raam.
At the end of one month, the king wanted to see all the horses. All the courtiers were giving a lot of straw to the horses to become stronger. They brought their horses and the King was very happy.
Tenali Rama did not bring his horse. The King asked, “Where is your horse, Tenali Raman?”
TranslateNa een maand wilde de koning alle paarden zien. Alle hovelingen gaven de paarden veel stro om sterker te worden. Ze brachten hun paarden en de koning was erg blij.
Tenali Rama bracht zijn paard niet mee. De koning vroeg: “Waar is je paard, Tenali Raman?”
He replied, “My King, my horse had become so strong that I could not bring it to the court. Can you ask the inspector to come tomorrow morning at nine to see the horse?”
The king was surprised on hearing this and said, “Agreed. The inspector will come to your house at nine to inspect the horse.”
TranslateHij antwoordde: “Mijn koning, mijn paard was zo sterk geworden dat ik het niet naar de rechtbank kon brengen. Kunt u de inspecteur vragen morgenochtend om negen uur langs te komen om het paard te keuren?”
De koning was verrast toen hij dit hoorde en zei: “Akkoord. De inspecteur komt om negen uur bij je thuis om het paard te inspecteren.”
The next morning, the inspector went to Tenali’s house. The inspector had a long beard. Tenali took him to the stable where the horse was kept.
He asked the inspector, “You can look through the window and see the horse”.
TranslateDe volgende ochtend ging de inspecteur naar het huis van Tenali. De inspecteur had een lange baard. Tenali nam hem mee naar de stal waar het paard stond.
Hij vroeg de inspecteur: “Je kunt door het raam kijken en het paard zien.”
The inspector peeped through the window and his beard went in through the window first. Seeing the beard, the horse thought that it must be straw that was being given to him at the fixed time. It caught hold of the beard in his teeth and pulled.
TranslateDe inspecteur gluurde door het raam en zijn baard ging als eerste door het raam naar binnen. Bij het zien van de baard dacht het paard dat het stro moest zijn dat hem op de vastgestelde tijd werd gegeven. Het pakte de baard tussen zijn tanden en trok.
The inspector shouted in pain and tried to pull his beard back. The horse knew that this was the only food he would get all day and pulled with all its might till the inspector lost his beard.
TranslateDe inspecteur schreeuwde het uit van de pijn en probeerde zijn baard terug te trekken. Het paard wist dat dit het enige voedsel was dat hij de hele dag zou krijgen en trok met al zijn kracht totdat de inspecteur zijn baard verloor.
The inspector went running to the king and reported that indeed Tenali Raman’s horse was the strongest of them all.
TranslateDe inspecteur rende naar de koning en meldde dat het paard van Tenali Raman inderdaad het sterkste van allemaal was.
