Spanish short stories – Learning Spanish through English Akbar and Birbal – La olla Once upon a time, King Akbar was walking around the lake with his minister Birbal. The weather was very cold. The King touched the water and immediately took it out. Translate
Hubo una vez en la que el rey Akbar caminaba alrededor del lago con su ministro Birbal. Hacía mucho frío. El Rey tocó el agua e inmediatamente sacó la mano.
King Akbar said, “Birbal. This was is very cold. I do not think that anyone can survive one night in this cold water.”
Translate El rey Akbar dijo: “Birbal. Eso estuvo muy frío. No creo que nadie pueda sobrevivir una noche en esta agua helada.”.
Birbal said, “My dear King, I believe that is possible for a man who is brave and strong. I would say that it is not impossible”
Translate Birbal dijo: “Mi querido Rey, creo que es posible para un hombre valiente y fuerte. Yo diría que no es imposible.”.
King Akbar said, “Birbal. I shall give a 1000 gold coins and a job as a palace guard to anyone who is able to survive one night in the freezing water.”
Translate El rey Akbar dijo: “Birbal. Daré 1000 monedas de oro y un trabajo como guardia de palacio a cualquiera que pueda sobrevivir una noche en el agua helada.”.
The announcement was made throughout the kingdom. Only one poor man was willing to take up the challenge. He stood in the freezing water all night. There were two guards watching him all night and he survived the challenge.
Translate El anuncio se hizo en todo el reino. Solo un hombre pobre estaba dispuesto a aceptar el desafío. Estuvo en el agua helada toda la noche. Tuvo dos guardias vigilándolo toda la noche, y sobrevivió al desafío.
The next morning, the man was taken to the court for his reward. King Akbar asked, “My dear brave man, how did you survive the extreme cold for so long?”
Translate A la mañana siguiente, el hombre fue llevado a la Corte para recibir su recompensa. El rey Akbar preguntó: “Mi querido hombre valiente, ¿cómo sobreviviste al frío extremo durante tanto tiempo?”.
The man said, “My king, I was seeing a fire which was burning far away. I imagined that the fire was near me and that gave me warmth and the strength to survive the cold.”
Translate El hombre dijo: “Mi Rey, miré un fuego que ardía a lo lejos. Imaginé que el fuego estaba cerca de mí y eso me dio el calor y la fuerza para sobrevivir al frío.”.
King Akbar said, “This man is not worthy of the reward since he managed to survive the cold only because of the lamp. If the lamp was not there, he would have failed.”
Translate El rey Akbar dijo: “Este hombre no es digno de la recompensa, ya que logró sobrevivir al frío solo gracias al incendio. Si el incendio no hubiera estado allí, él habría fallado.”.
The man was very upset and felt that he was cheated. He went to Birbal and asked for his help. Birbal was a very clever minister and asked him to go home and that he will sort out the problem.
Translate El hombre estaba muy triste, sintió que lo habían engañado. Se acercó a Birbal y le pidió ayuda. Birbal era un ministro muy inteligente, le pidió que se fuera a casa y le dijo que solucionaría el problema.
Birbal was in the kitchens the next day and sent the cook home. Akbar went to the kitchen to find out why Birbal was cooking and not his cook. Birbal was beside the fire and the pot was 6 feet above it. Akbar started to laugh loudly.
Translate Birbal fue a las cocinas reales al día siguiente y envió al cocinero a casa. Akbar llegó a la cocina para averiguar por qué estaba cocinando Birbal, y no su cocinero. Akbar said, “Birbal, the pot is so far away from the fire. What are you cooking?” Birbal said, “I am making Khichadi for you, my King.”
Translate Akbar dijo: “Birbal, la olla está muy lejos del fuego. ¿Qué estás cocinando?”. Birbal dijo: “Estoy haciendo Khichadi para usted, mi Rey”.
Akbar said, “How will it become hot? The fire is not near the pot.” Birbal said, “But my lord, yesterday you said that the poor man stayed warm by looking at the fire. I am cooking Khichadi the same way.”
Translate Akbar dijo: “¿Cómo se calentará? La olla no está cerca al fuego.”. Birbal dijo: “Pero mi Señor, ayer dijo que el pobre hombre se mantuvo caliente mirando el fuego. Estoy cocinando Khichadi de la misma manera “.
Akbar realized his mistake and called the poor man to his court the next day. He was awarded 1500 gold coins and a job as a palace guard. Birbal was awarded one gold necklace for his intelligence.
Translate Akbar se dio cuenta de su error, y llamó al hombre a su Corte al día siguiente. Recibió 1500 monedas de oro y un trabajo como guardia de palacio. Birbal recibió un collar de oro por su inteligencia.
