The Hare and the Frogs – Aesop’s Fables
Hares are proverbially timid and a number of fables have been based on this behavior. The best known, often titled “The Hare and the Frogs“, is one among the Aesop’s Fables which follows this. It is number 138 in the Perry Index and is a very famous Aesop’s Fables story. In this story, the hare are very timid animals which are afraid even of a shadow moving and they want to find a more timid creature than they were….
The story
The Hare is the most timid of all animals. They are afraid of every sound. If they see even a shadow moving, they run away as fast as they can.
One day the rabbits kept a large council. The Rabbits decided, “We need to find a solution to our fear.”
One of the young rabbits said, “We need to be braver.”
The other rabbits said, “Yes. Yes. You are right. We need to be braver.”
The Head Rabbit said, “But we don’t know how. That is the whole problem. We need a different solution”
One of the rabbits said, “We can hide forever. Then we won’t have to be afraid”
The other rabbits said, “Yes. Yes. You are right. We need to hide forever.”
The Head Rabbit said, “But we need to come out to eat. We need a different solution”
One of the rabbits said, “We need to find someone more afraid that us. That will give us confidence.”
The other rabbits said, “Yes. Yes. You are right. We need to search for a bigger coward.”
All the Rabbits shouted, “But where?”
On hearing the sound, a few frogs panicked and jumped into the pond.
The Head rabbit said, “Look, the frogs are more afraid then us. We are not so bad after all.”
Moral: “However unfortunate we may think we are there is always someone worse off than ourselves.”
Moral of the story:
The moral of the Aesop’s Fable is that “A small gain is worth more than a large promise.”
