The Boy who cried Wolf – オオカミが来た

Once upon a time, there once was a boy who was very mischievous. He was very naughty. He used to climb up the trees. He used to run up the hill. He used to chase the sheep.

Every day he used to take his sheep to the forest to graze. The boy was very bored and he wanted to have fun.

昔々、とてもやんちゃな男の子がいました。彼はとてもわんぱくでした。彼はかつて木に登り、丘を駆け走り、羊を追いかけていました。

毎日彼は羊を森に連れて行って放牧していました。少年はとても退屈になり、何か楽しいことをしたいと思っていました。

He thought to himself “I am bored. I would like to have some fun.”

He shouted, “Wolf! Wolf! Wolf!”

彼は自分にこう思いました「退屈だな。何か楽しいことがしたいよ。」

少年は叫びました「オオカミだ!オオカミだ!オオカミだ!」

The villagers came running up the hill to help the boy drive the wolf away. But when they arrived at the top of the hill, they found no wolf. The boy laughed at the sight of their angry faces.

“Don’t scare us when there’s no wolf!” They went grumbling back down the hill.

村人達は少年がオオカミを追い払うのを手伝うために丘を駆け上がってきました。しかし、村人達が丘の頂上に到着したとき、 オオカミは見当たりませんでした。少年は村人達の怒った顔を見て笑いました。

「オオカミなんていないのに私たちを怖がらせるな!」村人達はブツブツ言いながら丘を下りました。

 

Later, the boy sang out again, “Wolf! Wolf! The wolf is chasing the sheep!” To his naughty delight, he watched the villagers run up the hill to help him drive the wolf away.

When the villagers saw no wolf they sternly said, “Do not waste our time. Call us only when there is really something wrong! Don’t cry call us when there is no wolf!”

その後、少年はもう一度叫びました「オオカミだ!オオカミだ!オオカミが羊を追いかけている!」彼は村人達がオオカミを追ひ払うのを手伝うために丘に駆け上がる姿を見てやんちゃな風に喜びました。

オオカミがいないのを確かめた時村人達は厳しくこう言いました「私たちの時間を無駄にしないでくれ。本当に何かが起きた時にだけ呼んでくれ!オオカミがいない時に泣いて呼ばないでくれ!」

 

But the boy just grinned and watched them go grumbling down the hill once more.

Later, he saw a REAL wolf prowling about his flock. Alarmed, he leaped to his feet and screamed out as loudly as he could, “Wolf! Wolf!”

しかし少年はただニヤリと笑い、村人達がブツブツ言いながら丘をもう一度下ってくのを見送りました。

その後、少年は本当のオオカミが彼の群れにうろついているのを見かけました。驚きのあまり、彼は立ち上がり、できる限りの大声で叫びました。「オオカミだ!オオカミだ!」

 

The villagers thought he was trying to fool them again, and so they didn’t come.

At sunset, everyone wondered why the shepherd boy hadn’t returned to the village with their sheep. They went up the hill to find the boy. They found him weeping.

村人達は少年がまた彼らを騙そうとしているのかの思い、彼らは助けにいきませんでした。

日没になると、羊飼いの少年が羊を連れて村に戻らなかったのはなぜだろうと誰もが思った。村人達は少年を見つけるために丘を登りました。村人達は少年が泣いているのを見つけました。

“There really was a wolf here! The flock has scattered! I cried out, “Wolf!” Why didn’t you come?”

An old man tried to comfort the boy as they walked back to the village.

“We’ll help you look for the lost sheep in the morning,” he said, putting his arm around the youth, “Nobody believes a liar…even when he is telling the truth!”

村に戻る途中、老人は少年を

彼らが村に戻ったとき、老人は少年を慰めようとしました。

「明日の朝、私たちが羊を探すのを手伝うよ。」「真実を言っても、誰も嘘つきは信じないよ」と老人は若者に腕を回し言いいました。
